Retail & E-commerce

How retail, marketplaces, e-commerce and pricing shape commercial execution across CEE.

Retail and e-commerce in CEE cannot be reduced to a list of accounts. The important question is how each channel influences availability, consumer trust, promotional intensity, price visibility and the economics of every other partner.

Five forces shaping the channel landscape

01

National retail groups

A small number of buying organisations can determine whether a brand gains meaningful offline scale.

02

Regional e-commerce leaders

Strong local and regional platforms often matter more than global teams expect.

03

Cross-border transparency

Prices, stock and product versions travel across borders even when agreements do not.

04

Marketplace acceleration

Marketplaces validate demand quickly, but can establish an uncontrolled low-price reference.

Retail is not only distribution

A listing is not the same as a launch. Retail performance depends on assortment clarity, product content, availability, reviews, promotions, training, merchandising and a credible reason for the buyer to allocate attention. Brands entering CEE often underestimate the work required after the first purchase order.

E-commerce is not automatically a low-cost route

Online channels remove some physical barriers but create new ones. Price comparison is immediate. Weak product content is visible. Reviews compound quickly. Cross-border sellers can undermine local margin. Advertising spend and platform fees may absorb the economics that appeared attractive in a simple wholesale calculation.

The channel questions worth answering first

A strong channel strategy assigns a clear role to each partner. It does not simply open every available route and hope the market organises itself.
